New York Yankees 2023 Top 30 Prospect Wraps: Kyle Carr
InsideThePinstripes.com will review each of the New York Yankees’ Top 30 prospects, as ranked by MLB.com at the end of the 2023 season.
No. 15: LHP Kyle Carr, Florida Complex League Yankees (Rookie)
Statistics for 2023: Carr did not pitch in the Yankees organization.
Season Transactions: Carr was drafted in July and signed by the Yankees on July 18. He was assigned to the Yankees’ Florida Complex League team on July 31.
Season Summary: The Yankees opted to take it slow with Carr, who is 21 years old and was drafted out of Palomar Junior College in Palomar, Calif. There’s good reason for that — he had Tommy John surgery as a high school senior in 2021. Still, two years later, he was considered the top junior college prospect in the 2023 MLB Draft and the Yankees snagged him in the third round.
Road Through the Organization: With Palomar Carr had an incredible season, as he went 12-1 with a 2.31 ERA. He struck out 111 in 78 innings and walked just 19 batters. That was more than enough to get major colleges interested in him, and he was committed to joining Big 12 power TCU before the Yankees came calling with a $692,000 bonus. That was enough to get Carr to start his pro career.
What’s next: He’s a strike-thrower, per his MLB.com scouting report, and that’s a plus when there are other things to work through. He has a solid fastball but he needs to refine his slider and develop a quality third pitch, which will most likely be a change-up. If he can get to the point where he has a three-pitch repertoire and can add a little strength, there is a chance he could be a starter at the MLB level. But, the Tommy John surgery and his stint in the junior college ranks means he’ll start no higher than Class-A Tampa in 2024.
