Pirates Sign Polarizing Ex-Yankees Pitcher After Rollercoaster Season
One former member of the New York Yankees has found his next home.
Former Yankees pitcher Domingo Germán made his big league debut with New York in 2017 and has remained with the club ever since. He showed some impressive upside winning 18 games in 2019 and even pitching a perfect game in 2023.
Germán did have some troubles with New York, though. He was placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball in 2019 due to domestic violence allegations and was suspended. He also was placed on the restricted list in 2023 after leaving the team to seek treatment for alcohol abuse.
New York placed him on outright waivers at the end of the season and opted for free agency.
Germán has been looking for his next opportunity and reportedly has found it as he reportedly signed a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training, according to MLB insider Mike Rodriguez and the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
"Domingo Germán to Pirates," Heyman said. "Minors deal with (Major League Baseball) camp invite Mike Rodriguez on it.
It wouldn't be too surprising to see Germán get an opportunity with the Pirates at the big league level in 2024. He had a 4.56 ERA with New York in 20 total appearances in 2023 and has a 4.41 career ERA in six big league seasons.
Pittsburgh took a step forward in 2023 and could end up surprising some people in 2024. Hopefully, Germán can get back on track with Pittsburgh.
