Yankees Legend Blasts Club After Disastrous Season; Will Changes Be Made?
The New York Yankees have some serious work to do.
New York struggled on the field in 2023 and won just 82 games despite sky-high expectations. The Yankees struggled so much that it has led owner Hal Steinbrenner to announce that the organization will be audited and changes will be made not just on the roster.
It sounds like organizational changes are something Yankees legend Reggie Jackson would like to see. The Hall of Famer joined Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and David Ortiz on Fox Sports' pregame coverage of the Major League Baseball postseason and ripped the club for its handling of Yankees alumni, according to the New York Daily News Sports' Gary Phillips.
“Whether you’re Derek Jeter or whether you’re (Alex Rodriguez) or Reggie or Andy Pettitte or Bernie Williams or Mariano Rivera, your voice isn’t heard,” Jackson said. “You don’t participate. I walked away because I wanted to be involved and leave my knowledge in the game. We didn’t get a chance to be involved in some of the say-so, and our opinions didn’t really get valued...”
"Jackson’s most recent comments came at a time when the Yankees are being scrutinized from the inside and out for the way they use analytics. The organization has also brought in more people with playing and scouting experience over the last year. That group includes Pettitte, second-half hitting coach Sean Casey, and advisors Omar Minaya and Brian Sabean."
New York needs to make changes on the field but it sounds like more needs to be done. Jackson now is a special advisor for the Houston Astros and it sounds like when he was in a similar position in New York, it didn't work out the same. On the outside looking in it's difficult to know the inner workings of the Yankees organization but it sounds like something needs to be done.
