Celtics Sign Second-Round Pick Jordan Walsh

The Celtics, who created an approximately $6.2M traded player exception from the Grant Williams sign-and-trade, now have one open roster spot.

After his first practice with the Celtics' Summer League squad, second-round pick Jordan Walsh conveyed to Inside The Celtics his goal while in Las Vegas is to "dominate every single game with the team and get a W."

Two days before he takes the floor for the first time as a professional, the 38th overall pick has signed a four-year, $7.6 million deal, per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

Boston utilized the second-round exception, which allows teams over the cap to sign players picked in round two to a three or four-year deal with a team option for the final year of the contract. It also won't count against the cap until July 31, so going this route preserves the entire $5 million taxpayer mid-level exception for the Celtics.

With Walsh occupying a full-time roster spot, rather than coming on board with a two-way deal like Boston did with last year's second-round selection JD Davison, the team only has one vacancy left. That could change if the Celtics waive Justin Champagnie, who's on a non-guaranteed contract.

Boston recently created an approximately $6.2 million traded player exception in the sign-and-trade sending Grant Williams to the Mavericks, a deal also bringing back multiple second-round picks.

That could help the Celtics, who have added Oshae Brissett and Dalano Banton in free agency, fill out their roster. It could even be the difference in acquiring a player who multiple teams are interested in signing, such as Christian Wood or Terence Davis.

Keep in mind Boston's currently $3.4 million below the second apron, per Spotrac. Even if the Celtics are willing to cross that threshold, and Brad Stevens did say they have the "green light" to continue adding payroll at Kristaps Porzingis' introductory press conference, it's unlikely they'll do so for a lower-cost free agent who's still available.
