Latest Update on Chris Paul Rumors
There is a quote from ESPN's Zach Lowe regarding Phoenix Suns guard Chris Paul that has been heavily aggregated on social media over the last several days. As is common with aggregation accounts, the full context of Lowe's comments have been omitted some places.
This is the full quote from Lowe, which was stated on his podcast:
"There are teams that could use Chris Paul. Lots of teams, for a short-term contract that you can get out of after one year. I mention the aggregation thing because of only one team I would look at, and this is through no reporting, I have no inside sources. The Clippers have telegraphed that they think they need a point guard to run their team. [Russell Westbrook] worked out much better than I expected. He’s a free agent [and] they’re going to have handicaps signing him that they don’t have in aggregating salaries to get up to $30 million. That’s just common sense."
As Lowe stated, his comments about Paul and the Clippers were in regards to the financial pathway to a deal, as opposed to a sourced report regarding the likelihood of such a deal taking place.
Since these comments, there was a report from Bleacher Report's Chris Haynes that indicated a likelihood that Paul will be back with the Phoenix Suns next season:
"The Phoenix Suns are likely to guarantee the full salary of star guard Chris Paul for the 2023-24 season, league sources tell Bleacher Report. Paul, 38, is only guaranteed $15.8 million of his $30.8 million wage if he were to be waived by the June 28 deadline. Phoenix still maintains some flexibility with the decision, but the franchise is currently of the mindset that Paul will open up next season as the team's starting point guard, sources say."
While some headlines have made a Chris Paul reunion with the Clippers seem like a possibility, it seems more likely that he will be back with the Suns next season.
