BREAKING: Boston Celtics Make Trade With Memphis Grizzlies
It was reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Wednesday afternoon that the Memphis Grizzlies are trading forward/center Xavier Tillman to the Boston Celtics in exchange for two second round picks.
Tillman‘s name had been floated around as a possible trade candidate for several weeks, as he is set to hit free agency this summer. Rather than risking the possibility of losing Tillman for nothing, the Grizzlies get back a couple of picks, while Boston adds some front court depth.
Had Memphis not suffered so many injuries that pushed them out of the playoff picture, perhaps Tillman would not be on the move. That said, with the playoffs out of reach, the Grizzlies have to make decisions with an eye for the future. As for Boston, they are absolutely in win-now mode, which is why a couple of second round picks are a reasonable price for a depth piece like Tillman.
Boston has been the best team in basketball all season, and they now add Tillman to a very talented roster. While there may not be many minutes for Tillman, he will certainly be a reliable bench piece to help out Boston's front court.
This move makes sense for both sides, as Tillman moves on from the only NBA team he has played for to join a serious championship contender in the Celtics.
