BREAKING: Ja Morant Enters Counseling Program After Gun Video Incident
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Monday evening that Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has entered a counseling program in Florida. The Grizzlies star has been away from the team since he was seen flashing a gun during an Instagram live video.
When asked about Morant before Monday's game against the Dallas Mavericks, Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins said, "There are a lot of internal dialogues going on and obviously there’s still things going on at the league level that we’re in communication with. Ja's fully engaged in this process and ready for whatever comes next after these 2 games."
While there is no indication on whether Morant entering a counseling program was his decision or something required by the Grizzlies, the development is consistent with the tone Memphis has maintained throughout this entire situation. The Grizzlies have made it clear that they support Morant, but they have also made it clear that his behavior must improve.
"We're taking this very seriously," Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins said in his initial statement on the Morant situation. "There's a supportive element for someone that's got to get better and needs some help. But then there's also accountability to the team that we've got to stand for. Obviously nationwide, leaguewide, there's been a lot of attention on gun violence, and so for us, that's the stance that we've taken about how we can support Ja throughout this growth opportunity. It's a learning opportunity, and hopefully we can be better from it."
