BREAKING: NBA Announces Award for Ja Morant
The NBA announced on Tuesday afternoon that Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has won Western Conference Player of the Week. Morant led the Grizzlies to a 3-0 record in his first three games back from suspension, averaging 28.0 PPG, 9.0 APG, and 5.7 RPG. Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid won the Eastern Conference Player of the Week award, averaging 40.7 PPG, 12.0 RPG, and 6.0 APG for the week.
Morant's play since returning from suspension has been inspiring for a Grizzlies team that desperately needed a boost. While Memphis knew it would be a very difficult first 25 games without Morant, injuries to other key rotation players made it more difficult than they could have anticipated.
Going 6-19 in Morant's absence, the Grizzlies buried themselves in the Western Conference standings, but their star point guard looks determined to dig them out of this hole. Other reinforcements are on the way for Memphis, starting with the seemingly imminent return of Marcus Smart. Sharpshooting guard Luke Kennard should also be back soon, which will help stabilize the Grizzlies' rotation.
There is still a lot of work to be done for Memphis, but Morant's play has them very encouraged right now. There were a lot of impressive players in the Western Conference this past week, but Morant took home Player of the Week honors for what he was able to do.
