Grizzlies Expected to Make Controversial Roster Move Soon
Memphis Grizzlies fans love Kenneth Lofton Jr. Unfortunately, it looks like they'll be waiving the fan favorite as Ja Morant nears his return.
According to a report from Damichael Cole of The Commercial Appeal, the Memphis Grizzlies are expected to waive second-year center Kenneth Lofton Jr.
Lofton is often remembered for putting up 42 points and 14 rebounds in a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on April 9, 2023. It was not only his career high, but he also became the only player in NBA history to put up 40 points and 10 rebounds in a first career start.
While some may criticize Lofton for being out of shape, it's very clear that he's a capable NBA player. He won the NBA G League Rookie of the Year Award, All-NBA G League First Team, and NBA G League All-Rookie Team. In college, he was also the Conference USA Freshman of the Year. A player doesn't just get that many accolades by age 21 without being special.
Whoever picks up Kenneth Lofton Jr. may find themselves a diamond in the rough. Even without getting in shape, Lofton has a great skillset of an undersized center. If he does get into better shape, similar to how Nikola Jokic has, then he'll become an even better player.
While Lofton's chapter with the Grizzlies may be ending, it certainly won't be the end of his NBA career.
