Brooklyn Nets center Nicolas Claxton is set to hit unrestricted free agency this summer, which will make the versatile big man one of the more sought after players on the market. Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant recently liked a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) about Claxton and his free agency, sparking speculation about the Grizzlies potentially going after him:

Like Morant, Claxton is also from South Carolina, and the two actually played AAU basketball together. This connection could be the only reason Morant is liking a post in support of the Nets center, rather than it having anything to do with the Grizzlies possibly pursuing Claxton, but the speculation has officially been sparked among the Grizzlies fanbase:

Claxton would be a fantastic fit on the Grizzlies, as his skillset would compliment a lot of what they do. A lob threat, Claxton would pair well with Morant, while also being a versatile defender that could help elevate the Grizzlies on that end as well. NBA free agency has become very tricky, especially under the league's new CBA, but the Grizzlies have done well to position themselves for this summer.

After the Grizzlies dealt Steven Adams to the Houston Rockets, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski wrote, "The deal unloads $12.4 million in guaranteed salary off the Grizzlies' payroll for 2024-25, dropping them about $17 million below the punitive $190 million level of the salary cap referred to as the second apron. Oladipo, who's on an expiring contract, has no timeline for his return to play."

Perhaps the Grizzlies freeing up money like this was the first step towards making a run at a guy like Claxton.
