Memphis police records acquired by the Washington Post detailed an incident between Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant and a 17-year-old boy that reportedly got violent. The Washington Post reported that Morant was accused of punching the teenager and threatening him with a gun. The story included that Morant also filed a police report, explaining that his actions were in self defense. The case has been reviewed, and no charges were filed.

In a Tweet on Wednesday, Morant's lawyer and agent each released statements that called the reporting irresponsible and defamatory. Morant's lawyer Keenan Carter wrote, "Today, a Washington Post journalist chose to post a blatant lie to social media, claiming Mr. Morant pointed a gun at a 17-year-old. There was not and is not a basis for this defamatory statement. To be clear - this did not happen and no one claims that it did other than one irresponsible journalist. Her conduct was both unprofessional and reckless. Mr. Morant will defend his name, reputation, and seek legal recourse immediately."

Morant's agent Jim Tanner also released a statement that read, "Any and every allegation involving a firearm has been fully investigated and could not be corroborated. This includes the NBA investigation last month, in which they found no evidence. The July 26th incident was purely self-defense. Again, after this was fully investigated by law enforcement, they came to the decision not to charge Ja with any crime. Any of the dozens of witnesses will confirm Ja acted in self-defense and that he did not have a firearm."

Tanner's statement concluded with, "Ja is a family-first man who loves giving back to his community. He's an extremely talented athlete. It's disturbing that unsubstantiated rumors and gossip are being put out by people motivated to tear Ja down and tarnish his reputation for their own financial gain."

Morant's representation made it clear that no gun was pointed, and the reporting surrounding the incident was irresponsible and defamatory.
