Here We Go Again: Knicks Land Donovan Mitchell in Trade Proposal
It's been nearly a year since the New York Knicks were engaged in trade talks with the Utah Jazz for Donovan Mitchell.
While the Knicks struck out last summer and the Cleveland Cavaliers made the blockbuster deal to acquire him, there may be a chance Mitchell is on his way to New York after all with his free agency coming in 2025. Speculation around a Mitchell trade has re-opened after doubt surfaced around the idea of the Elmsford, NY native signing a long-term deal.
NBA Analysis Network pitched a deal that would send Mitchell to the Knicks for R.J. Barrett, Josh Hart, and three future first-round draft picks.
The price is hefty for Mitchell, but this may be one of the better deals New York could get. Barrett and Hart's roles would decrease if Mitchell came to the Knicks, and the latter is set to be a free agent next summer. Barrett is set to start a four-year, $107 million contract next season, and that should help match the salaries to get Mitchell over to New York.
It's possible that the Cavs may want someone like Quentin Grimes in the deal as well, a player who performs well on both ends of the court that's still on an affordable rookie contract, but this is the main framework of the trade.
It's very unlikely that a trade for Mitchell would happen this offseason, as Cleveland still believes in building around him. But if the Cavs fail to make any progress in their path toward competing for a championship, it may be in Cleveland's best interest to chat with New York about a Mitchell trade.
