ORLANDO - The Orlando Magic is entering a new era after promoting Anthony Parker as the new general manager.

Longtime NBA fans may remember Parker as a player. He was the No. 21 pick in the 1997 NBA Draft and started his career with the Philadelphia 76ers (1997-99) and Magic (1999-00).

Parker struggled to find his footing in the beginning of his NBA career, so he ventured overseas, playing in Israel and Italy before returning to the league. Parker signed with the Toronto Raptors in 2006 and played there until 2009.

By the time he returned to the NBA, his sister Candace was making an impact in women's college basketball and became the No. 1 pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft.

Parker returned to the U.S. in 2009, signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers and playing there until his retirement in 2012.

Following his retirement, Parker immediately re-joined the Magic as a scout and fulfilled that role until 2017, when he was promoted to become the G League general manager. He served in that role until 2021, when he became an assistant general manager back with the Orlando team. Now, he's the one in charge as the general manager, taking over for John Hammond, 68, who is now working in an advisory role.

Parker's experience as a player, scout, G League general manager and assistant GM make him a sound fit to lead the team in its player development as it looks to snap a four-year playoff drought.
