Magic Ex GM Rob Hennigan: Thunder Promotion Coming?

Former Magic general manager Rob Hennigan may be in the market to be hired to a new role with a new franchise soon.

The business of the NBA is very intricate, and everything that comes together on the court can be attributed to what's happening in the front office. There's also plenty of movement across front offices, as they are the ones who can drastically shape and change a franchise.

Members of a successful front office often get to be promoted in-house to be rewarded for their work, or they get opportunities for a bigger role with another franchise.

Rob Hennigan is a former general manager for the Orlando Magic, and he saw changes across other franchises like the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs.

The former Magic general manager was named to a list of potential front office employees who could be in line for a promotion soon.

"Rob Hennigan is expected to garner interest of his own as Oklahoma City reemerges in the perennial playoff picture over the next few seasons behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the rest of the talented young Thunder," Yahoo! Sports insider Jake Fischer writes. "Hennigan had his first shot leading a front office with Orlando from 2012-17 and has since returned to OKC, where he was promoted to vice president of basketball operations in 2020."

While Hennigan is unlikely to earn a position to become the general manager for the Thunder, as Sam Presti's job is more than safe, front office members that have come from Presti's umbrella have found success elsewhere.

Hennigan was the general manager for the Magic from 2012 to 2017. He had already been with the Thunder for some time, but he's gained even more experience with the Thunder during his second stint.

Presti and the Thunder have had to navigate a rebuild since Hennigan's return, and he now could have a deeper level of understanding on how to both run a franchise but keep it relevant on a competitive level consistently.
