NBA Free Agency Betting Odds: Mavs Favorites to Re-Sign Kyrie Irving; Lakers Close Second?

The Dallas Mavericks are the early betting favorites to retain he services of star point guard Kyrie Irving in free agency, but oddsmakers believe teams like the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Atlanta Hawks have a shot as well.

The NBA playoff excitement has begun, but the Dallas Mavericks are forced to watch from home after producing an "unacceptable" season that ended with a 38-44 record.

The Mavs have a huge offseason ahead of them, and the number of roster-building options they have could be determined by where they fall in the draft lottery on May 16. After that, though, all eyes will shift to free agency, where Dallas will attempt to execute its self-proclaimed "top priority" of the summer – re-signing star point guard Kyrie Irving.

According to Bookies.com, the Mavs are the favorites to re-sign Irving, but the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Atlanta Hawks, Miami Heat and Washington Wizards are all listed as options for the eight-time All-Star as well. Here are what those odds look like:

  • Dallas Mavericks +250 (28.6%)
  • Los Angeles Lakers +350 (22.2%)
  • Los Angeles Clippers +400 (20%)
  • Atlanta Hawks +750 (11.8%)
  • Miami Heat +800 (11.1%)
  • Washington Wizards +1000 (9.1%)
  • The Field +500 (16.7%)

Given how much success the Lakers have experienced with its new cast of players acquired at this year's trade deadline, it's hard to see why they'd want to gut their newfound depth in order to add Irving on a large contract. With the other teams, however, you can squint your eyes and see potential paths to sign-and-trades that would make sense should the Mavs fail to re-sign Irving as expected. Players like Paul George, Trae Young, Kyle Lowry, Bam Adebayo and Bradley Beal come to mind when looking at that list of odds.

It's a long offseason, and again, things could change drastically based on how the lottery goes in a month from now, especially if the Mavs get lucky for the first time in franchise history to give them the opportunity of drafting Victor Wembanyama. From there, whether that luck plays out or not, it will be up to owner Mark Cuban and GM Nico Harrison to make sure the roster around Luka Doncic improves heading into next season.
