Mavs in Talks to Hire Ex-Jazz Executive Dennis Lindsey: Details

The Dallas Mavericks, coming off a disappointing season that has them sitting at home during the NBA playoffs, are in advanced talks to hire a new front office voice with experience.

With less than a month away from finding out where they’ll be in the 2023 NBA Draft order, the Dallas Mavericks have already started making some tweaks to their front office dynamic.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavs are in ‘advanced discussions’ to hire former Utah Jazz executive Dennis Lindsey.

“League sources tell The Stein Line that the Mavericks, fresh off plummeting from the Western Conference finals into the lottery, are in advanced discussions to hire former Utah Jazz lead decision-maker Dennis Lindsey to join the organization as a special assistant to general manager Nico Harrison,” Stein wrote.

“Sources say Harrison has been looking for an experienced sounding-board voice to join the Mavericks in a consultant’s role dating to last offseason.

“This is a pivotal summer in Dallas, with the Mavericks not only faced with trying to re-sign Kyrie Irving in free agency but addressing well-chronicled concerns about its interior and wing defense and rebounding despite limited trade assets or salary-cap flexibility to make moves.”

Lindsey was linked to the Mavs two years ago as an option to potentially join Harrison in the Dallas front office, but nothing ever came of it. Now, it appears those talks have picked back up and both sides are ready to move forward.

After a number of costly miscues by the Mavs’ front office over the years, it’s been obvious for a while that new voices are needed. Perhaps Lindsey’s voice can make a difference, because as Stein noted, this is a pivotal offseason for not only Dallas’ immediate future, but possibly its distant future as well.

Here is what ESPN’s Brian Windhorst had to say about Lindsey two years ago:

“Dennis Lindsey has done as good of a job as any executive for the last decades in the NBA. He built that team in Utah from scratch in a small market,” Windhorst said.

“And the reason he is no longer the president… Some of the stuff that he’s saying about why is leaving, I’m sure it’s true… is because he got on the opposite side of Donovan Mitchell. If you are on the opposite side of your franchise star, you’re just not going to survive. That’s just the way it is.”

We’ll see if Lindsey can avoid being in the opposite side of Luka Doncic.
