Suns Hire Former Mavs, Jason Kidd Assistant Greg St. Jean; Details
With the NBA offseason now upon us, it's not just changes to the Dallas Mavericks' roster that we'll be witnessing; it's their coaching staff as well.
As of now, the Mavericks have three open spots on Jason Kidd's coaching staff, including the vacancy left behind by former assistant Greg St. Jean, who was dismissed following the end of the regular season. However, it didn't take long for St. Jean to land on his feet with a familiar face.
On Thursday, NBA Insider Marc Stein reported that St. Jean is expected to join the Phoenix Suns as an assistant on new head coach Frank Vogel's staff. St. Jean spent two years with Vogel in Los Angeles during the Lakers' championship run between 2019-21 as a player development coach before following Kidd to Dallas.
Outside of the vacancy left behind by St. Jean's departure, the other two openings are made up by Quinton Crawford's exit, who also opted to rejoin Vogel in Phoenix, and shooting coach Peter Patton, who left Dallas after a five-year stint to become the director of player development for the Chicago Bulls.
Despite rumors of having interest in former head coaches like Jeff Hornacek and Jeff Van Gundy, Kidd has yet to make a hire since the end of the season. With most coaching staff openings starting to fill up throughout the league, Kidd and company look to be running behind in their search to fill up open spots on the bench.
