As the season's trade deadline is just around one week away, the Brooklyn Nets stand as one of the must-watch teams who could make a swing.

The Nets are poised to make a significant retooling after the recent zigzagging progress that they've made. After flashing a strong season start, they experienced a lopsided 4-9 stretch throughout January which landed them at the problematic 11th seed of the East with a 19-27 record.

The likeliest Net to get traded: Spencer

Noting that they have considerable pieces that can be moved to bolster their rally towards the second half of the season, ESPN's Brian Windhorst identified Spencer Dinwiddie as the likeliest Net to be dealt as the Feb. 8 deadline approaches

Holding an expiring $20.3M deal, it makes such sense that Spence is at the team's trade block. If Brooklyn would go for a transaction, Windy pointed out that they might seek a guard in return — which may potentially secure them a reunion with former franchise star D'Angelo Russell who has been a frequent component of the league's trade chatter.

“If they do make a deal, it would likely be for a guard -- former Nets All-Star D'Angelo Russell has been among those names floated. With an expiring $20.3 million deal, Dinwiddie is the likely fulcrum in any big move before the deadline.”

Assessing Dinwiddie's trade case

For 44 games played this season, Spencer is averaging 12.9 points and 6.1 assists. He is shooting the ball at a 39.0 percent clip and 32.4 percent from the three-point area.

It's been well known not only around the team but also in the entire league that Dinwiddie is the best candidate for the Nets to throw should they participate in this season's trade deadline. The team hasn't shown any key signs of intention to extend him, and there were past reports already that Brooklyn tried to engage in trade talks that subjected the veteran guard.

As Ben Simmons made his spectacular return and is slated to become the Nets' starting spot at the point once he regains his composure, Spencer is about to see his role and exposure declining. As it is, the 30-year-old’s future in the team this season massively depends on how Ben responds for the following games to come.

With plenty of teams trying to monitor the availability of Spencer, the Nets can take their time as they still have plenty of days to go to continue weighing their options and assess their trade situation.
