Spurs' Victor Wembanyama Reveals Plans for FIBA World Cup
San Antonio Spurs rookie star Victor Wembanyama is set to have a ton on his plate over the next few months as he prepares for his first NBA season.
But to ease the load and stress, he's making a "necessary sacrifice" to help focus on growing with the Spurs, as Wembanyama revealed that he won't be playing for his home country of France in the upcoming 2023 FIBA World Cup later this summer.
"It would not be realistic in terms of development and not prudent in terms of health," Wembanyama told French publication L'Equipe, via ESPN. "I hope people will understand. It's frustrating for me, too. The France team is still central for me. I want to win as many titles as possible with the team. But I think it's a necessary sacrifice."
France begins FIBA play on Aug. 25 against Canada. After his expected participation at the NBA Summer League in July, Wembanyama could realistically suit up for his home country in time. But already coming off a long season with Metropolitans 92, rest is of key importance for a guy that the Spurs want to keep fresh as much as possible.
While certainly a tough decision to make considering his involvement with the national team in the past, Wembanyama likely has bigger goals in mind when it comes to rejoining his countrymen. Paris will host the 2024 Summer Olympics, setting Wemby up for a return to France on an even bigger stage.
