Spurs 'Awesome' Trade Idea with Wizards: Tyus Jones or Monte Morris?

The Washington Wizards are in a full rebuild while the San Antonio Spurs are looking to become a contender again in the coming seasons with Victor Wembanyama. Does a trade make sense?

The San Antonio Spurs certainly have the cap space available to add a veteran point guard to place alongside Victor Wembanyama in Gregg Popovich's offense.

But what about a potential trade instead?

During an appearance on Brian Windhorst's podcast, ESPN NBA analysts Tim MacMahon and Tim Bontemps proposed the idea of the Spurs and Washington Wizards engaging in trade talks to send either Tyus Jones or Monte Morris to San Antonio.

"I think call San Antonio and ask them if they want a good, run-your-offense veteran point guard," MacMahon said of the Wizards.

Bontemps agreed.

"Either Tyus Jones or Monte Morris would be awesome in San Antonio," he said.

Both Morris and Jones currently find themselves on one of the worst rosters in the league despite being suitable as backups on a contender. Morris, a former Denver Nugget, was traded to Washington last offseason. Jones has been a staple on the Memphis Grizzlies over the past handful of seasons, but arrived to the Wizards via trade as well prior to Thursday's draft.

The Spurs could work well in that middle ground as an interesting fit. The Wizards are in a full rebuild while San Antonio is looking to become a contender again in the coming seasons, making a potential trade between the two sides one that makes sense for many reasons, though the most notable is how it could impact Wembanyama.

"Just get you in your offense, make sure Victor's getting the ball, getting the ball at his spots," MacMahon said. "I would call San Antonio and see who's loaded up on picks and see if there's something there."

The Spurs also have an unclear direction at point guard. Tre Jones, Tyus' younger brother, could be the team's starter next season, but is entering restricted free agency this offseason. If another team is willing to throw a big contract his way, it's unclear if the Spurs would want to match a potential offer sheet.

However, all of this remains only an idea with no actual rumors or reports to base anything off of. Aside from selecting Wembanyama, the Spurs tend to make offseason moves that many may not see coming. Time will tell if their interest in a trade with Washington becomes public.
