Victor Wembanyama Makes Spurs, Texas Basketball Better
As expected the interest in San Antonio Spurs tickets is skyrocketing.
Want to see Victor Wembanyama's first preseason home game? Forget about it; they're gone. Try some back alley website.
If the preseason is gonna be like this I can only hope my status as talk show host and amateur sports writer will score me a season credential. I can't imagine what some will pay for the actual home opener at the AT&T Center. Since the Spurs won the NBA Draft Lottery in May they've sold over 4,000 new season tickets.
In the two days after the draft on June 22 the team saw a "3,000% increase in year over year online traffic and sales" according to Spurs senior corporate communications coordinator Lucy Kaneb. The second Wemby put that Spurs cap on and shook NBA Commissioner Adam Silver's hand there is just no telling how much the overall value of the club increased to. $500 million? That might be low in the long run.
I love seeing Spurs fans mix it up online with Houston Rockets fans. For too many years now that rivalry has been dormant. With San Antonio drafting Wembanyama first overall and Houston taking Amen Thompson with the fourth overall pick there's reason for hope on both sides of the fence between the two Texas neighbors.
Just use your favorite search engine or social media and type in "Spurs Rockets" and sit back and enjoy the banter. Reader beware, much of it is vulgar. I love it. The smack talk smoldered after a now viral video of Wembanyama's gleeful reaction on lottery night when the Rockets got the fourth pick. He knew he wouldn't slip that far and his reaction was clear: he did NOT want to go to Houston. Hopefully the Dallas Mavericks can finally do right by star Luka Doncic.
It's a better world when all three Texas teams are good. The matchups are great and the entertainment value online by the fans is too.
