In this story:

The San Antonio Spurs' rebuild has a lot more clarity now after winning the NBA Draft Lottery to select Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 pick.

The Spurs tore down their roster this past season and relinquished all star power to have the best chance at the top pick ... and the basketball gods smiled on them.

The last time the Spurs won the draft lottery, they selected Tim Duncan and won 56 games the following season. If Wembanyama is considered to be an even better prospect than Duncan, could San Antonio possibly build a roster that can contend in 2023-24?

"They have a ton of cap space, they got extra picks," FOX Sports analyst Nick Wright said. "If they agree with this, they should go for [a title] almost immediately."

It's a bold statement, but the Spurs would have to do a lot to get to that point. The team has extra first-round picks from the Dejounte Murray trade to the Atlanta Hawks last offseason, but they would need to do something with that future draft capital in order to contend next year.

While Wembanyama is good and has the chance to become one of the league's greatest players of all-time, his legacy cannot be built in a day. That being said, if the Spurs can manage to add some veterans next to Wembanyama, San Antonio could be back in contention sooner rather than later.
