Bill Simmons Pokes Fun at Robert Sarver, Suns
Off-season talk surrounding the Phoenix Suns continues to grow as we await the decision on restricted free agent center Deandre Ayton.
Most of that talk lands on Ayton and where he may possibly play in the future after reported tension between him and the team. The Suns failing to reach an agreement with Ayton on a contract extension last season further the belief Phoenix isn't willing to commit big money to their former No. 1 pick.
The Golden State Warriors, fresh off their fourth championship in eight years, were quite the spenders when it came to their roster and deep-dive into the pool of luxury tax money.
Bill Simmons Compares Golden State to Phoenix
NBA pundit Bill Simmons gave the Warriors their props in his latest podcast following their NBA Finals win over the Boston Celtics.
"Organizationally, you just have to hand it to them (Golden State). They spent like, an incredible amount of money … What we want from our franchises and our owners is like: Spend some f------ money. Your team increases in value every year, put it back in the team. These guys (the Warriors) did this kind of, almost in a reckless way. They spent like crazy- with the luxury tax and stuff last year with Kelly Oubre, I think that was a $100 million dollar decision just to not trade him at the deadline. But you can't argue with just how first class everything is in there."
Simmons then compared the ultra-spending Warriors to the Suns, specifically when it came to Ayton's situation and their unwillingness to hand over a max contract.
"When you look at like, the Suns where they low-ball Ayton, they screw up the Jalen Smith pick and don't take (Tyrese) Haliburton and then they just get rid of Jalen Smith because they want to cut salary cap, and the Warriors are the opposite of that, of the Sarver (ownership in Phoenix)."
A bit later in the show, co-host Joe House also commented on Ayton's situation:
"I think Deandre Ayton is going to go to the right situation. Now, it's funny that the Suns is not the right situation but he didn't have the maturity to deal with the team not offering him the extension and it impacted his relationship with with the Coach of the Year Monty Williams. I respect Phoenix's ability, developmentally. They made Mikal Bridges a gigantic amount of money."
