Bengals Training Camp Takeaways: Trevor Siemian Impresses, Charlie Jones Injured, Irv Smith Shines
CINCINNATI — Bengals wide receiver Charlie Jones suffered a shoulder injury during Thursday's practice.
The 24-year-old made a diving catch on the far sideline against Jalen Davis and came down hard on his left shoulder. He didn't look injured in the moment, but trainers looked at his shoulder for an extended period of time before taking him to the locker room.
Jones wasn't the only Bengals weapon to make a big play. Trenton Irwin, Ja'Marr Chase, Andrei Iosivas and Irv Smith Jr. all had big catches during Thursday's session.
Smith showed off his ability, hauling in (at least) eight catches during team drills, including a beautiful pass up the seam from Trevor Siemian. It was perfect ball placement and Smith did the rest.
Irwin had the catch of the day and maybe the best grab of camp. A one-handed snag in the corner of the end zone. The offense erupted after the catch. Cam Taylor-Britt was in coverage.
Speaking of Taylor-Britt, the second-year cornerback continued to make plays. He was dominant in 1-on-1 drills and made a nice tackle on Chris Evans in the backfield.
Dax Hill also tripped up Chase Brown and prevented the rookie from running for a big gain.
Both quarterbacks made some solid throws, with Siemian playing with the starters. He completed 15-of-16 passes in team drills and took care of the ball, which is going to be crucial in the backup quarterback battle.
Jake Browning continues to have a strong camp and the competition to be Joe Burrow's backup could very well be tied after seven sessions, even with Siemian's stellar play on Thursday.
Burrow was in the locker room, walking around without a limp and sporting a sleeve on his right calf.
Other Notes
Myles Murphy moved inside and outside on Thursday—playing on both sides of the defensive line and at tackle. The Bengals first round pick will be used in a variety of ways this season.
Jonah Williams had a good day at right tackle. Orlando Brown Jr. and Williams were left on islands facing B.J. Hill and Sam Hubbard in 1-on-1 situations. The offensive line won both matchups.
Overall, the offense won the day. Joe Mixon had some nice runs. The search for a pass blocking back continued with Trayveon Williams out with an ankle injury.
Brown and Evans both did some good things on the ground, but the quickest path to playing time is proving they can pass block.
