CINCINNATI — Bengals rookie running back Chase Brown is hoping to earn regular playing time on offense this season.

The former fifth round pick has to beat out Chris Evans and Trayveon Williams if he's going to takeover the passing down role that Samaje Perine had last season.

Williams is expected to miss a few weeks with an ankle injury. That gives Brown a chance to show what he can do, not only as a pass protector, but as a runner.

He's off to an impressive start according to offensive line coach and run game coordinator Frank Pollack.

"Explosive, explosive. He's got good vision," Pollack said on Sunday. "He's learning on the timing of the exchanges. When it's RPO, he can't be as quick to the hole 'cause the quarterback's gotta read, but for the most part, he's making good decisions from his vision standpoint and his reads. It's been impressive from a run game perspective, that jumps out at me. He's a talented back. I'm excited to see that guy continue to do this [improve] through training camp."

Joe Mixon is the Bengals' starting running back. He'll be on the field for at least half the offensive snaps this season. If Brown can prove himself as a pass blocker, then it sounds like he could get plenty of touches when Mixon is on the sidelines.

Brown will get a chance to show what he can do against an NFL opponent during Wednesday's joint practice against the Packers and on Friday when he makes his debut in Cincinnati's preseason opener.
