Joe Mixon on Tweaked Contract: 'Plan' to Play Rest of Career in Cincinnati
CINCINNATI — Joe Mixon spoke to media members for the first time this training camp on Sunday. The seventh-year player noted how relieving it is to have his contract situation finalized for the next couple of seasons.
Mixon was open to a pay cut as Cincinnati enters extension territory with key players.
"It's a great thing," Mixon said about the resolution. "Year 7 for me and that's a big deal. Seven with the same organization and it's a blessing. I plan on being here for the rest of my career and hopefully just gonna extend it as long as possible as long as I'm doing what I should be doing. And like I said, it's a blessing to be here and very thankful."
The running back is scheduled to make $5.8 million this coming season which is roughly a $3 million decrease from his cash value before the contract got altered.
Mixon said he didn't have any direct conversations with owner Mike Brown during the renegotiation, but knows he's valued by the head man.
"You know what I did not," Mixon said about speaking with Brown. "But I've seen Mike Brown every day on the football field when we go to practice and I'll talk to him pretty much every time and most of the time, as y'all know, he's usually driving his cart, he drives by me every time. Wants to shake my hand or talk to me and just say thank you and how much he really appreciates me and to me, that means a lot. I can't thank him enough for him taking a chance on a 20-year-old boy out of Oklahoma. Here I still am. It's a great thing to see."
Mixon needs 1,070 rushing yards this season to become the second-leading rusher in Bengals history.
