Joe Burrow Ranks Among NFL's Least-Helped Quarterbacks In New Stat, Despite Social Media Narrative: 'We Know Who Joe Burrow Is'

Cincinnati did not put enough production around Burrow when he was healthy in 2023.
In this story:

CINCINNATI — Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is playing the sport on hard mode according to a new statistic from EJ Snyder and others: QB Team Help Composite Score.

Only Bryce Young and Tommy Devito played out their seasons with worse team situations than Burrow. In other words, Burrow carried the Bengals when he played this past season, ranking 30th in QB Team Help Composite Score.

The hard data flies in the face of some critics who are building a narrative that Burrow's receiving options are the reason for his success. That couldn't be further from the truth, evidenced by a 41% perfectly covered rate faced on his passes this season (31st leaguewide).

Burrow is making his own throwing windows and that high-level of difficulty resulted in a 66.8% completion rate this past season (lowest since his rookie season).

Kay Adams asked Bengals center Ted Karras about those claims this week:

"I don't think either of those guys have made a Super Bowl," Karras said in reference to the viral video that claimed Burrow was getting more help from his receivers than Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson. "We need to go and try and win one here, but I think that's overblown. We know who Joe Burrow is and what he's about."

Check out the full numbers below and details on how Snyder and the rest of the minds behind this weighted the statistics that went into the composite score.
