Prospect Breakdown: Is Michael Mayer Perfect Fit For Cincinnati Bengals?
After losing Hayden Hurst in free agency, the Bengals have a big need at tight end. They may add a veteran, but it makes sense to take at least one in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Out of all the tight ends in the draft this year, Michael Mayer is likely the most pro-ready. He’s someone that could come in and get meaningful snaps immediately.
Right tackle, cornerback, and defensive tackle are also areas the Bengals could address early in the draft, but there’s a chance the Notre Dame tight end is the best player on the board at No. 28.
Measurables:
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 249
40 time: 4.7
RAS: 7.58
Strengths:
Mayer's hands are a big strength of his, along with high-end ball skills. He could be a consistent possession receiver for Joe Burrow. Mayer is also solid after the catch. He doesn’t have breakaway speed, but he runs with power and gains extra yardage after contact. The Bengals were seventh in the league in red zone touchdowns last year, and someone like Mayer could improve that even more.
When it comes to blocking, Mayer is a capable blocker in the run game that takes advantage of his size to bully defensive backs and linebackers. He plays the game very physically, which is something the Bengals could use from a tight end.
Overall, he’s a powerful possession receiver with good in-line blocking skills. His physicality and size help him to be a well-rounded tight end, and someone that could help the Bengals win in 2023.
Weaknesses:
Mayer doesn’t have breakaway speed. While I think he’s a well balanced tight end, he won’t be breaking off very many 50 yard touchdowns. He’s a valuable weapon, but his ability as an athlete is a slightly limited.
I consider blocking a strength for him, but there is room for improvement. He is dominant against defensive backs and linebackers, but struggles at times against defensive ends and interior defensive linemen.
Summary:
The Bengals need a tight end, and Mayer is an incredibly well-rounded player who offers exceptional pass catching abilities and good blocking. If Mayer makes it to No. 28, he could be a great pick for the Bengals and help the team right away.
