The Athletic Has Bengals Picking Justin Herbert Over Joe Burrow In 2020 NFL Redraft

Burrow slipped one spot to No. 2.

CINCINNATI — The Bengals are more than happy with their first-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, but The Athletic's Diante Lee thinks they should've made a different choice.

Lee had the Bengals taking Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert over Joe Burrow in the latest redraft exercise.

"Frankly, there’s no need to mess with a good thing in Cincinnati," Lee wrote. "Burrow has played in a Super Bowl and consecutive AFC Championship Games. But I just can’t help myself. Herbert is the more talented quarterback, and it’s hard to imagine that his time with a supporting cast like Burrow has had in Cincinnati would be disappointing.

"Who can begrudge the original pick, though? When it happened, Burrow was three months removed from being the engine of the best passing offense in college football history (by a wide margin). Burrow doesn’t go first overall here, but he has played well enough to stick near the top of this redraft."

Lee had the Commanders swooping in to take Burrow at No. 2.

"Washington avoids the hamster wheel of Alex Smith, Taylor Heinicke, Carson Wentz, and Sam Howell by adding a true franchise quarterback," Lee wrote. "We know, in hindsight, that talent along the defensive front is neither Washington’s issue nor the cure-all for what else ails this roster. Making a change at QB would help Washington get the most out of Terry McLaurin(who still has averaged 80.3 catches and 1,120.7 yards receiving the past three years). Burrow is comfortable in chaos and has a proven track record of navigating average or worse offensive line play."

It's a little bold to just assume Justin Herbert could turn around a flailing franchise like the Bengals were before Burrow showed up.

Still, Herbert is a great talent and probably would've succeeded in some way as a Bengal, just like the 2020 No. 1 pick.
