Roger Goodell On NFL Officials: 'They Meet' Our 'Incredibly High Standard'

There will not be sweeping changes to the NFL's officiating structure.

CINCINNATI — Fans hoping for sweeping changes to how the NFL handles officiating got a rude awakening this week from commissioner Roger Goodell.

The NFL leader does not see any urgent issues with the profession.

"When you look at officiating, I don't think it's ever been better in the league," the commissioner said during a news conference. "We think our officials are doing a great job. We'll always look (at performance). ... The reality is, our officials are held to an incredibly high standard, and they meet it."

The missed calls from Ron Torbert's crew in the 2023 AFC Championship Game brought out heavy calls for change. Yet, it's hard to find better officials than the highest-paid football judges in the world employed by the NFL.

The status quo is not changing, Cincinnati will just have to make more plays the next time they post an AFC Championship Game appearance.

“It will never be perfect,” Goodell said about replay review and officiating. “We all have to realize the quality of our broadcasts, you’ve never been able to see the kinds of things you can see today. You see it in ‘Super Slo-Mo,’ you see it where you can actually stop it. Sometimes, that distorts a call potentially, but the reality is that our officials are held to an incredibly high standard and I think they need it. Will we try to get better? You betcha.”
