Bengals Hiring Dan Pitcher as New Offensive Coordinator: Will Zac Taylor Continue to Call Plays?

Taylor has called plays since he became head coach in 2019.
In this story:

CINCINNATI — The Bengals are hiring Dan Pitcher to be their new offensive coordinator. The 37-year-old has been on Cincinnati's staff since 2016.

Pitcher was promoted to quarterback's coach in 2020, just months before the Bengals took Joe Burrow with the No. 1 overall pick.

Head coach Zac Taylor has been the offensive play caller in each of his five seasons with the Bengals. Pitcher had interviews with multiple teams before deciding to stay in Cincinnati, but that doesn't mean he's going to call plays on offense.

There are no plans to change the play calling duties at this time, league sources tell All Bengals.

Taylor will continue to call plays, but Pitcher's role will obviously expand in many ways.

Former offensive coordinator Brian Callahan handled a lot of the game planning and worked closely with Taylor, Burrow and Pitcher on a daily basis. Now Pitcher will take over that role.

Who will replace Pitcher? Assistant quarterbacks coach Brad Kragthorpe is certainly the favorite for that job.

Taylor made Pitcher the assistant quarterbacks coach in 2019 with Alex Van Pelt still on the staff, before promoting him to the role in 2020. Taylor did the same with Kragthorpe last offseason, making him assistant quarterbacks coach.
