'Nowhere Close!' Bills TE Dalton Kincaid's Role Still 'To Be Determined'
When teams spend premium draft picks on players, they often do so with a set plan in mind as to how they'll utilize the asset they've acquired.
But the Buffalo Bills appear to be an anomaly, at least in the "big picture," with first-round pick Dalton Kincaid, the first tight end selected in April's draft.
According to offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, the Bills are still in the feeling-out phase with Kincaid as they try to see where he fits best within Buffalo's offense.
"We're nowhere close to knowing what the big picture is going to be," Dorsey said during OTAs, "because we have to learn him and he has to learn us in a lot of ways within the system and within what we can do."
Dorsey added that Kincaid's role is still "to be determined," and evidently will remain that way for the foreseeable future, or at least until the two sides "learn" one another, which Buffalo's second-year offensive coordinator warned could take until training camp or the start of game action.
Still, while the Bills may not have a clear vision for how Kincaid fits, the former Utah star has enjoyed an impressive start to OTAs - just ask his peers.
Bills quarterback Josh Allen described Kincaid's route running and pass catching ability as "very fluid," while fellow tight end Dawson Knox dubbed his college resume as "very, very impressive" and mentioned he's excited for the 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends) looks that Buffalo's offense can give opponents this fall.
And really, this is what the summer is for - figuring out precisely how to use newcomers and, in the Bills' case, incorporating them into one of the league's best offenses.
Better yet, while Buffalo may not know quite yet how Kincaid will line up on Sundays, it's evident that he's poised to contribute in some form or fashion, likely earlier rather than later.
Ultimately, things will sort themselves out ... but in the meantime, seeing how Kincaid progresses not only with his skill set but his alignment within formations will certainly be a storyline to monitor in the coming months.
