Stefon Diggs' Frustrations with Bills Revealed; New Role Coming?
For the final week of minicamp, there was no shortage of drama for the Buffalo Bills.
It began with Stefon Diggs' absence on Tuesday, then the heat was turned up when Bills coach Sean McDermott said he was "very concerned" that the team's top receiver wasn't there. Diggs was at camp the following day, and McDermott clarified that his absence was excused, but that led to more questions than answers.
One potential peak into Diggs' frustration came from NFL insider Ben Volin. As fans saw after the Bills' 27-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Divisional, the receiver was visibly upset on the sidelines and reportedly stormed out of the locker room after the loss. Diggs also wasn't at Buffalo's voluntary workouts.
But Volin is reporting that Diggs' recent frustration relates to his role in the offense, which led to his absence on Tuesday.
"Diggs' frustration is with his role in the offense and his voice in play-calling, per a league source close to the Bills' locker room," Volin writes. "He was visibly agitated at Allen during the 27-10 playoff loss to the Bengals."
While the Bills, Josh Allen and Diggs have tried to quell the flames, the questions surrounding Diggs' frustration will become more prevalent as the season nears. The drama is one that NFL.com believes could hurt the Bills as they try to keep pace in the AFC.
"Buffalo can't afford this type of drama," NFL.com writes. "The Bills are trying to keep pace with two teams that have beaten them in the last two postseasons (Kansas City and Cincinnati) and they're going to face far more pressure to maintain their dominance in the AFC East (with the Jets and the Dolphins loading up for their own pursuits of a championship)."
Buffalo has its sights on the Super Bowl, but the clock is ticking. Allen, Diggs, the coaching staff and Buffalo's offense need to be on the same page.
With an improved AFC East combined with the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals showing no signs of slowing down, the drama is the last thing the Bills need heading into the 2023 season if they want contend for a Super Bowl.
