Crazy Theory: Stefon Diggs Drama 'Perfect' for Bills?
Perfectly imperfect? Most of Bills Mafia - and the NFL, for that matter - cringed at the recent spat between Stefon Diggs and the Buffalo Bills coaching staff. Drama that started out making coach Sean McDermott "seriously concerned" and the star receiver missing mandatory minicamp practices seems to have cooled as training camp approaches in three weeks.
But there are those in the glass-half-full community who believe the distraction actually worked out well - even perfectly - in Buffalo.
"For the long-term success of the team, the Stefon Diggs minicamp absence played out in a perfect way for the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen," claims a story published this week by Fansided. "A team who has its sights set on a Super Bowl win does not want to start its season with a key skill position player taking a public stand against the team. But the Bills future might be stronger thanks to Stefon Diggs absence."
Don't get us wrong, we spend every waking moment looking for silver linings amongst Buffalo's dark clouds. But Diggs not on the same page with his coaching staff being the stuff of rainbows and butterflies seems like an irrational stretch.
"There is, however, one key upside to Diggs’s absence early in the year for both the Bills and Josh Allen," says the story. "When planning for the Bills, Diggs isn’t easy to gameplan for per se, but he is an obvious piece of the offensive scheme for Buffalo. He gets plenty of attention from opponents, and as such tends to be smothered in coverage. So, having other weapons for Allen to rely on is important."
First of all, Diggs and his 108 catches for 1,429 yards and 11 catches doesn't feel real "smothered" to us. Secondly, his absence opens the door to more passes to ... Trent Sherfield?
To be fair, Allen has been singing the praises of the sixth-year receiver with a whopping four career touchdowns whom Buffalo signed as a free agent in March.
“I’ve loved what I’ve seen from Trent so far; the dude works extremely hard," Allen said after a recent OTA practice. "He’s one of the hardest-working guys on the team. Doesn’t complain about anything. He’s rolling right now.”
Sure there are finances involved. And the story cites some football, too, in that the Kansas City Chiefs won a Super Bowl using rookies Isiah Pacheco and Jerrick McKinnon just as much as high-priced veterans Kadarius Toney and JuJu Smith-Schuster.
But c'mon, Sherfield in a pinch over Diggs? Is it really a "perfect" blessing that you ran out of steak but are blessed to still have a can of Spam?
