Broncos Have Hired 6 New Coaches Under Sean Payton
Since arriving as the new head coach of the Denver Broncos, Sean Payton has been patient and deliberate in assembling his staff. As it stands, Payton's Broncos have hired six coaches, but two coordinator slots remain conspicuously open.
- Ben Kotwica | Special teams coordinator
- Mike Westhoff | Assistant head coach/special teams
- Dan Dalrymple | Strength and conditioning coach
- Zach Strief | Offensive line coach
- Declan Doyle | Tight ends coach
- Logan Kilgore | Quality control/passinggame coordinator
There have been reports that Payton plans to retain secondary coach Christian Parker and defensive line coach Marcus Dixon. But many position coach openings remain. Another candidate to be retained is wideouts coach Zach Azzanni.
Right now, Broncos Country is dying to learn who Payton ultimately taps to serve as defensive coordinator, knowing that the offense and the play-calling on that side of the ball will be helmed by the head coach. There are a few names reportedly in the running, including Sean Desai, but Rex Ryan and Vance Joseph have stolen the headlines of late.
Ryan is reportedly the favorite to land the job. But according to Adam Schefter, Ryan will only leave the cushy trappings of media for the "perfect situation." Meanwhile, Joseph appears to be in demand around the league for various defensive coordinator openings.
Don't sleep on Desai, though, the former Seattle assistant for whom Vic Fangio reportedly has glowingly recommended around the NFL. As for offensive coordinator, again, who the Broncos hire is important, but that's Payton's area of expertise.
As we kick off a new week at Dove Valley, expect a few more coaching dominoes to fall for the Broncos.
UPDATE: According to 9NEWS' Mike Klis, Azzanni will follow Nathaniel Hackett to New York to coach the Jets' wideouts.
