The summer has arrived following a busy couple of months that featured the opening window of free agency and the 2023 NFL Draft. On Monday, the Baltimore Ravens announced that they were signing veteran quarterback Josh Johnson to a deal. A journeyman signal-caller, Johnson has suited up for an NFL record 14 different teams and this is his third stint with the Ravens. He's effectively played for nearly half of the league.
The former San Diego star began his professional career with Tampa Bay after being selected in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He spent his first three years with the Buccaneers and was primarily a backup to Byron Leftwich and Josh Freeman. During his rookie year, he completed a career-high 63/125 passes for 685 yards with four touchdowns to eight interceptions.
The trio of seasons is the most consecutive years that Johnson has spent with any franchise in the NFL. He's also played for the San Francisco 49ers (2012, 2014, 2020-21, 2022), Cleveland Browns (2012), Cincinnati Bengals (2013, 2015), New York Jets (2015, 2021), Indianapolis Colts (2015), Buffalo Bills (2015), Baltimore Ravens (2016, 2021, 2023), New York Giants (2016), Houston Texans (2017), then-Oakland Raiders (2018), Washington (2018), Detroit Lions (2019), and Denver Broncos (2022).
Outside of the NFL, Johnson had stints in the XFL, Alliance of American Football (AAF), and United Football League (UFL). He was the XFL's passing leader while suiting up for the Los Angeles Wildcats in 2022.
During his career, Johnson has completed 206/355 passes (58%) for 2,280 yards with 13 touchdowns to 16 interceptions. He holds a 1-8 record as a starter and hasn't started since week 16 of the 2021 season for Baltimore in relief of Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley.
