The Arizona Cardinals Have Kyler Murray's Back
If you were to take a random poll of fans (whether it be general football fans or loyal Arizona Cardinals fans), you'd likely get close to a 50/50 split on opinions surrounding quarterback Kyler Murray.
Some will tell you that talent-wise, he's one of the best players the franchise has ever seen. Others will tell you that he's simply not going to fulfill his potential at the next level.
There's no mincing where the Cardinals stand.
Being genuine for a second: Arizona's current front office and coaching staff have no ties to Murray. Monti Ossenfort didn't draft him, and Jonathan Gannon didn't hand-pick him as his head coach.
With the Cardinals projected to have two high draft picks in 2024 (their own and one that belongs to the Houston Texans), a new franchise quarterback for the organization to mold from the college ranks would be a real possibility - especially one that's younger and cheaper.
Nobody could blame Arizona's new front office for looking to move on, but it doesn't appear that way.
The Cardinals have been very vocal to the public about their admiration/belief of Murray since Gannon/Ossenfort took over.
"He’s a legit problem for defenses," said Gannon. "He has a very unique skillset and that’s what I’m looking forward to. Working with him and showing him, ‘Hey, this is how defenses are going to try to stop you. Here’s what you need to be ready for.’
"These are the things that we’re going to do with him that’s going to help him move all the way up and down the field, score a bunch of points, be explosive and protect the football."
Their actions have also shown that as well - highlighted by Gannon (along with some of his offensive staff) and Ossenfort making the trip to see the unveiling of Murray's Heisman statue in Oklahoma the weekend prior to the draft.
Even then, some were skeptical on the organization's intentions.
However, Cardinals insider and Compare.bet's Kyle Odegard says within the walls of the facility, their stance on Murray isn't any different.
"The first few months of collaboration between Murray and the new regime in Arizona has brought a high level of optimism about their long-term future together, according to multiple sources familiar with the dynamic," said Odegard.
"New coach Jonathan Gannon has brought a high level of positivity to Arizona, and there is a refreshing new energy within the building that has players excited for 2023, sources said."
Odegard also mentions the Cardinals' visit to Norman, OK for Murray's Heisman statue made a "positive impression" and coaches have been impressed with Murray's quick grasp of the new playbook.
Former head coach Kliff Kingsbury may have been an offensive-minded coach for Murray to learn from, but it appears clear as day that the new regime in Arizona is far more supportive of Murray.
For better or worse, the Cardinals have Murray's back moving forward.
