Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon Not Worried About Missing Stars
TEMPE -- The Arizona Cardinals held their first day of offseason team activities, though some notable names were missing from the Dignity Health Training Center on Monday morning.
Both receiver DeAndre Hopkins and safety Budda Baker were not present for today - which was voluntary. Mandatory Minicamp begins June 13.
Hopkins recently appeared on a "I AM ATHLETE" podcast episode where he discussed his current situation with the team.
After practice, Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon said he wasn't worried about the All-Pro receiver's absence.
"I'm not worried about Hop. He's played a long time and he's extremely intelligent and I think he'll fit right in when he decides to come. But again, it's voluntary so that's his decision and we're behind it," Gannon said.
When asked if he was ever told directly from Hopkins on a trade request, Gannon said, "We've had good conversations, I'll keep those between us but I like Hop."
Rumors and speculation have surrounded Hopkins since the early stages of the offseason, but developments only arrived recently around Baker and situation in Arizona. He reportedly asked the Cardinals to make him the highest-paid player at his position, with a trade request following after Arizona didn't oblige.
"I think Budda will show up when he wants to show up. He's been awesome, he kind of wears us out a little bit with the tape and different things like that. But he's working, he'll get himself ready to play," said Gannon.
