Kyler Murray 'Vastly Overpaid' in NFL QB Rankings
Opinions are like podcasts - everybody has one.
When you're Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray, you're bound to receive some criticism. Such is life when you're a Heisman Trophy winner on top of being the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft.
Yet some of that criticism is deserved. For as much talent as Murray possesses, even teammates have questioned attributes such as maturity and leadership.
Until Murray at least leads Arizona to a win in the postseason, the outside noise will be quite loud.
In the Chicago Sun-Times' QB rankings, Murray fell in the "Vastly Overpaid" category along with Daniel Jones and Deshaun Watson.
Murray - who ranked No. 13 (behind Jones and Watson) had the short description attached under his ranking:
"The Cardinals gave him $159.8 million guaranteed last year. He tore his ACL and is expected to miss the first half of this season," said Patrick Finley.
Last offseason, Murray inked a five-year, $230.5 million contract extension with Arizona.
In terms of total value, Murray's deal ranks sixth in the NFL behind Patrick Mahomes ($450 million), Lamar Jackson ($260 million), Josh Allen ($258 million), Jalen Hurts ($255 million) and Russell Wilson ($242.5 million).
Murray is fifth in both annual average ($46.1 million) and guaranteed money at signing ($103.3 million).
There's been some speculation that Arizona could move on from Murray if they don't like what they see in 2023. Murray's recovery from a torn ACL on of adjusting to a new offense (without DeAndre Hopkins) will be something to watch.
If the Cardinals were to trade Murray after the 2024 league year begins, they'll take on $81.5 million in dead cap.
Left tackle D.J. Humphries - who has been rehabbing a back injury alongside Murray - has seen his quarterback in a different light.
"I feel like I have learned a lot about Kyler because we've been in the training room a lot," said Humphries.
"I feel like I've gotten to know him more this offseason, just being around him and seeing him attack his rehab like this, it has been impressive. It's different. You see quarterbacks, you don't get to see the work because it's not like - they're not going to be in the weight room deadlifting all this weight. You don't get to see it. But being in the building and watching him grinding since we've been in the offseason, it's been fun to see. You get to see something different from your guy."
