Cardinals' Offseason Graded as One of Worst in NFL
We're just one week removed from the 2023 NFL Draft, where the Arizona Cardinals have the possibility to obtain some high quality players from the collegiate ranks and get their rebuild off in the right direction.
Tonight, they're also unveiling new uniforms that (hopefully) can bring a bit of solace and excitement for Cardinals fans that frankly hasn't been felt in some time.
After the draft, we'll be right in time for offseason team activities and eventually will be in camp. The wheels will soon be turning for the 2023 season.
When it comes to evaluating the offseason before the draft, not many have been fans of what Arizona has done.
That's understandable when you look at the amount of losses the team has suffered on a few different fronts.
However, Bleacher Report gave the Cardinals a dismal D+ grade for their offseason ahead of the draft. Only the Baltimore Ravens (D-), Green Bay Packers (D-) and Los Angeles Rams (F) scored lower.
After going through the different losses in free agency (and adding in Kyler Murray's ACL + the trade situations with DeAndre Hopkins and Budda Baker), author Kristopher Knox concluded with this:
"However, this offseason will be retrospectively judged on the success of new head coach Jonathan Gannon and the decision to hire him over Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.
"In Philadelphia, Gannon coached a defense that was loaded with top-tier talent—and one that fell flat on the biggest stage. Anarumo, meanwhile, coached a defense that reached back-to-back AFC title games and ranked sixth in points allowed in 2022 (Philadelphia ranked eighth) despite having only one Pro Bowler (defensive end Trey Hendrickson) over the past two campaigns.
"At least Arizona had the good sense to move on from Kliff Kingsbury, whose teams lacked an identity and intensity, despite just signing him to an extension last offseason."
The Cardinals have endured an ugly offseason - but they needed to.
The reality is rebuilds aren't supposed to be pretty. Far too many teams have tried to reload rather than rebuild and struck out in the process. Rather than pretend they can realistically compete in 2023, the Cardinals have stuck to their guns and stripped things down to the bare minimum.
It will get worse before it gets better - but the Cardinals are doing things the right way.
