Could Cowboys Make Splash for Cardinals WR DeAndre Hopkins?
The 2023 NFL Combine is now a thing of the past, though rumors and speculation will swirl until free agency and the 2023 NFL Draft comes and goes.
The Arizona Cardinals are a team to watch for a few reasons as a new regime under general manager Monti Ossenfort will look to turn the ship around after a 4-13 season.
While the team's third overall selection will continue to draw debate, the Cardinals may need to figure out the future of receiver DeAndre Hopkins - who is expected to be traded relatively soon according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport.
With Hopkins' no-trade clause voided after his suspension, Arizona is now able to offload him to whoever the highest bidder could be. While trade packages differ on what is deemed "fair" for a 30-year-old Hopkins with a $30.75 million cap hit next season, the teams that could acquire the superstar pass catcher are numerous.
One team could possibly be the Dallas Cowboys, who are looking to make a splash on offense according to NBC Sports' Matthew Berry.
"However, I was told that 'Dallas wants to make a splash on offense.' While they like Michael Gallup and think he'll be better this year, they don't feel like they have a true star in the passing game beyond CeeDee Lamb and Jerry 'wants to make a splash.' What that splash means remains to be seen, whether it's trading up (or for) a big-name player, a splashy signing in free agency or what, but they definitely want a big headliner," Berry said.
"I threw out to my source 'What about DeAndre Hopkins?' And my source said 'Yeah, something like that.' Again, it was my first thought, not my source's and he didn't bite beyond basically agreeing that would be a big splash, so I'm not even saying that's a rumor. But I thought it was interesting."
So, no real evidence to suggest the Cowboys are even close to wanting to engage in talks for Hopkins, though the move does make sense. Adding Hopkins to Dallas' offense would - in the mind of many - put the Cowboys near the top of the NFC in terms of offensive firepower.
Would Dallas be able to make things work financially? The Cowboys are -$24 million in cap space according to Spotrac.
However, teams around the league have proven capable of maneuvering room to get top-tier players. Dallas still has their original draft picks in each round, too.
