Report: Cardinals Center Rodney Hudson Retiring
The Arizona Cardinals are set to lose center Rodney Hudson to retirement, according to NFL insider Dov Kleiman.
Hudson entered the league as a second-round pick in the 2011 draft with the Kansas City Chiefs. After four seasons with Kansas City, he then joined the Las Vegas Raiders and soon made himself one of the top centers in the league.
The Cardinals acquired Hudson prior to the 2021 season for a third-round pick.
Thanks to various injuries, Hudson only played a total of 16 games with Arizona before heading into retirement. The 33-year-old only played four games this season.
Hudson was set to hit free agency this offseason. He was one of four starting offensive linemen potentially departing the Cardinals with Justin Pugh, Will Hernandez and Kelvin Beachum being the others.
Arizona has a few potential replacements in mind. Backup Lecitus Smith told All Cardinals his goal was to be in competition for a starting job next year.
"I'm gonna continue to show up day in and day out to work. And I seriously really, really want to get to a spot where I'm fighting for that center spot. I don't believe in handouts, I'm just speaking personally, I don't believe in it. I believe the best man is going to get the job," said Smith on his goals for next season.
Arizona may also look to the 2023 NFL Draft for their replacement. One of the top interior OL in John Michael Schmitz confirmed he had a formal interview with Arizona.
