DeAndre Hopkins' Future With Cardinals Growing More Uncertain
The Arizona Cardinals haven’t exactly made headlines through the first few days of free agency.
The team has managed to lose their top two free agents in CB Byron Murphy and DE Zach Allen while only making one exterior signing in former Philadelphia Eagles LB Kyzir White. Arizona also brought back Kelvin Beachum, Will Hernandez, Matt Prater, Ezekiel Turner and Corey Clement.
News continues to circulate on the status of DeAndre Hopkins, who has reportedly been on the trading block since the early days of the offseason. Rumors have come and gone, but it's clear the Cardinals are very open to parting ways with Hopkins.
To no surprise, plenty of teams have made calls on his availability.
NFL insider Jeff Howe reported the New England Patriots were one of the teams to inquire on Hopkins' availability and price point.
Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien was Hopkins' former head coach when the two were with the Houston Texans before Hopkins was dealt to Arizona. There's been whispers that Hopkins wouldn't mind a reunion with O'Brien but nothing major has developed on that end.
Hopkins - who spent much of his time in the state of Texas for the offseason - wouldn't have to travel too far for another potentially interested team in the Dallas Cowboys.
It seems like Hopkins or Cowboys LB Micah Parsons wouldn't mind that.
Hopkins initially had the Los Angeles Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars at the top of his wish list, though that was before it was unveiled Hopkins' six-game suspension voided his no-trade clause, returning all trade power to the Cardinals.
Arizona is clearly entering a rebuild and having the second-highest cap hit for receivers next season at $30.75 million isn't ideal. Hopkins -nearing the tail end of his career - may also want an opportunity to play for a Super Bowl, something the Cardinals won't offer any time soon.
During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Hopkins offered the following:
"Obviously I've been hearing a lot of trade talks. But I take things day for day, man. I don't look forward to the future. I live in the present moment. Right now the Arizona Cardinals is the team and the roster that I'm on. I'm preparing myself for whatever the future holds. I don't really look forward to the future, I let you guys do that talking," said Hopkins.
With the new league year beginning today, the Cardinals would be able to officially deal Hopkins to a new team.
While nothing is crystal clear, it sure seems like Hopkins won't be returning to the desert in 2023.
