Cardinals Receive B- Grade for Re-Signing Kelvin Beachum
We're in the beginning stages of free agency and the Arizona Cardinals have yet to make a splash.
Given the team is clearly heading into a rebuild after a disaster 4-13 season, it didn't make a lot of sense for the Cardinals to shell out money for any of the major prospects available. General manager Monti Ossenfort knows teams are built through the foundation of the NFL Draft, and thus April will be Arizona's time to shine.
To this point, offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum has been the lone free agent to be brought back after signing a two-year deal worth $5.15 million.
The move didn't exactly move mountains in any aspect, and that was reflected in Bleacher Report's grade of the signing:
Cardinals Receive B- Grade for Re-Signing Kelvin Beachum
"Apparently, Beachum's comments that Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray needed to 'grow up a little bit,' didn't preclude the team from re-signing him—per Jordan Schultz of the Score, the 33-year-old signed a two-year deal to remain in the desert. Beachum was a solid NFL starter for the Redbirds I 2022, so provided that the financials here are relatively reasonable it made sense to bring him back," said Gary Davenport.
"Grade: B-"
In a year that featured a plague of injuries up and down Arizona's roster, the Cardinals saw Beachum (who will be 34-years-old next season) play 1,180 snaps (97.93%), the most out of any offensive player in the desert. He was the only player to start all 17 games on offense.
Beachum's price tag isn't ridiculous and the Cardinals weren't going to completely overhaul their trenches in one offseason. The grade is fair, all things considered (though the next conversation with Kyler Murray may be a bit awkward).
