Former Cardinals CB Byron Murphy Signs With Vikings
The Arizona Cardinals went into this offseason fearful they could lose two of their top two free agents in either defensive end Zach Allen or cornerback Byron Murphy.
After losing Allen to the Denver Broncos, there was some fear that the Cardinals would miss out on Murphy.
Those fears came to fruition.
Murphy is reportedly joining the Minnesota Vikings according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
Murphy (who recently turned 25-years-old) was drafted by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Washington. Prior to his college days - where he earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors - he played his high school football locally at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, AZ.
Murphy’s ability to play in either a boundary or slot role made him one of the more attractive free agents on the market along with his youth.
Last season, Murphy landed on injured reserve with a back injury that kept him out after Week 10. Despite battling health issues, Murphy showed he was very capable of hanging with some of the best receivers in the league as a CB1:
Davante Adams (2 rec, 11 yards, 1 TD)
Cooper Kupp (4 rec, 44 yards)
DJ Moore (6 rec, 50 yards)
AJ Brown (3 rec, 32 yards)
NFL insider Tom Pelissero said Murphy was nearing the $16 million annually for a new contract before the start of free agency.
Marco Wilson is now the CB1 in Arizona.
