Former Cardinals Safety Isaiah Simmons Excited for New Start
A fairly shocking move was made on Thursday morning when the Arizona Cardinals dealt safety Isaiah Simmons to the New York Giants for a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft - physical pending.
The desire for both sides to move on was likely common - the Cardinals declined his fifth-year option under new guidance of general manager Monti Ossenfort and head coach Jonathan Gannon, making Simmons a free agent after this year.
Looking to have the best year possible and also likely wanting a fresh start regardless, Simmons is already excited to play with some familiar names:
Simmons was selected by the Cardinals as a top ten pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and never quite found his footing in the desert. Arizona deployed him at positions such as inside linebacker and nickel corner before eventually trying him at safety under the new regime.
It's a fresh start according to Simmons:
His last game with Arizona - Week 2's preseason loss against the Kansas City Chiefs - was perhaps his worst outing as a Cardinal, grading as a 26.2/100 according to Pro Football Focus (the worst on Arizona) and having a lot of his effort questioned in the process.
Simmons and the New York Giants will return to State Farm Stadium in Week 2 during regular season play.
