Kyler Murray Has Already Impressed New Cardinals OC Drew Petzing
New Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing is officially in the building.
Petzing was joined alongside head coach Jonathan Gannon on Thursday to answer questions for roughly 20 minutes.
Unsurprisingly, much of the talk surrounded Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray, a dynamic quarterback that is currently in the early stages of his ACL rehab.
Murray has made headlines all offseason, mostly in negative connotations.
Petzing, having accepted the offensive coordinator job over the weekend, said he's already been impressed with Murray.
"The way that he's attacking his rehab and just his competitive nature and how much winning matters him is really impressive. I think it's been fun to see. It's been fun to be around even in a short time. So it's gotten me excited to see him and coach him moving forward," said Petzing.
"It's gonna be a hot topic I hear. He's been in the building so I've had a chance to talk to him a lot over the last couple of days when I got out here and he's been great. I think he's really attacking the rehab. Really excited about what we got going on. So it's been great to get to know him and I look forward to that continuing these next couple of days."
Gannon said that Murray was a focal point of interviews with potential offensive coordinators.
"Everything that I structured, everybody that interviewed … the questions I was asking about philosophically how we're going to play on offense, what I think is really hard for defenses moving forward into 2023 and beyond. A lot of those had to do with Kyler," Gannon said.
"Ultimately, in my opinion, that's one of the number one jobs as the offensive coordinator is to maximize the skill set of the quarterback and the other positions as well. But we know that's the position that makes it go. So that was very centric around all the interviews, and I liked his [Petzing] answer.
The timetable for Murray to return is unknown, though Petzing said that's simply another thing the Cardinals will have to work through.
"I think it creates some unique challenges. But I think that's the nature of this league. I think no matter what year you're going into, there's going to be something that you have to handle and deal with. So it's something we're going to work through together as a staff, and we're going to put our guys in the best position to go out there and win when the fall comes," said Petzing.
