Encouraging Update Given on Cardinals QB Kyler Murray

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray is progressing through rehab well, according to head coach Jonathan Gannon.

The Arizona Cardinals have had plenty to do on the offseason checklist.

Through the first two weeks of free agency, the Cardinals have begun the process of their rebuild on the roster after gaining a completely new coaching staff and front office.

Arizona hopes to gain a better advantage on the trade front when it comes to receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Before you know it, the 2023 NFL Draft will be here as well.

A big portion of Arizona's offseason will be determined by the status of quarterback Kyler Murray, who is in the process of recovering from a torn ACL/meniscus suffered late in the 2022 season.

Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon gave an encouraging update on Murray at the 2023 NFL League Owner's Meeting when speaking with NFL Network's Steve Wyche:

"He was in Dallas with his surgeon this last week, and he's doing well," Gannon said. "They like where he's at. He's going to start doing some things in the strength room. He's coming along well."

The exact timetable on his return is still unclear. While he could return early in the season, some don't expect Murray to return until after midseason. NFL Media's Ian Rapoport said Murray wasn't going to rush himself back, and Gannon himself confirmed that at the 2023 NFL Combine.

It's smart for Arizona to ensure their long-term investment recovers properly, yet they'll have to find somebody suitable to run the show until he's 100% back. The Cardinals recently re-signed David Blough and also have Colt McCoy on the roster.

"Obviously whoever's out there playing quarterback for us isn't going to have the same skill set that Kyler has," Gannon said. "So we'll just tailor-fit what we're doing with the offense around that guy, and then when Kyler gets back in, we'll tailor-fit the offense around him. You know, a system will be in place, you might just call it a little bit differently with the guy that's pulling the trigger."
