Marco Wilson Doesn't Regret Famous College Shoe-Throwing Incident
Arizona Cardinals CB Marco Wilson is preparing to enter his third season as professional football.
Wilson has had some memorable moments on the field - perhaps the best was his flip into the end zone to put an exclamation point on a pick-six against the New Orleans Saints on Thursday Night Football.
When football fans mostly think of Wilson, one play in particular sticks out: The famous shoe throw. Let us set the scene, for those unfamiliar.
The No. 6 Florida Gators are locked in a battle with the 3-5 LSU Tigers. With 2:05 left in the game, the score is tied at 34-34.
The Tigers - on a 3rd-and-10 deep in their own territory - check down on a passing play and are stopped well short of a first down. Florida got a massive win by forcing a punt, and could potentially march down the field for a game-winning score to emerge to 9-1 on the season.
Wilson - who was in on the tackle - grabbed a loose cleat from the LSU player he tackled and threw the cleat far down the other side of the field.
Wilson was flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which gave LSU 15 yards and a fresh set of downs. The Tigers made good on their new opportunity and kicked what was eventually the game-winning field goal with 23 seconds left.
You can watch the entire sequence here:
On a recent "Footballville" podcast, Wilson was asked if he would throw the shoe again if he had the chance.
"Oh, 100%. I'd probably throw it further truthfully," said Wilson.
Snippet here:
Wilson was later taken in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by Arizona, where he has played for the last two years. With Byron Murphy out of the picture, Wilson will have the opportunity to show he's a legitimate CB1 in the league.
Hopefully no shoes will be involved in that process.
