Star Cardinals Draft Prospect Jalen Carter Back at NFL Combine
INDIANAPOLIS -- The Arizona Cardinals - sitting with the third overall pick in this year's draft - were one of a handful of teams at the top of the order who were interested in the talents of Georgia Bulldogs DL Jalen Carter.
Carter is a menace within the trenches, a behemoth that most offensive lines at the college level couldn't handle. His ability to wreck games by getting in the backfield bodes well for his next step.
There was plenty of hype surrounding Carter here in Indianapolis. He's sure to be a top five pick and was set to speak at the 2023 NFL Combine yesterday.
Yet roughly 15 minutes before he was slated to speak in front of a massive mob at his podium, reports emerged that Carter had warrants out for his arrest in the state of Georgia for two misdemeanor charges for reckless driving and racing charges that stemmed from a fatal car race that left recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy and offensive lineman Devin Willock dead.
“At first, Jalen Carter told police he was nearly a mile away when a UGA teammate and a football staff member died in a car crash. Now, his presence at the scene on Jan. 15 and his shifting accounts alter the police narrative that it was a single-car crash,” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said.
Carter didn't speak and was not spotted with his group of defensive linemen on Wednesday. He soon released a statement that said he was heading back to Georgia to sort things out.
Now, he's reportedly back in Indianapolis.
From NFL.com:
"Police say their investigation found that Carter and Chandler LeCroy, a Georgia recruiting analyst, were each operating vehicles in the manner consistent with racing after leaving downtown Athens at around 2:30 a.m. ET, with evidence demonstrating that their cars were switching lanes, driving in the center turn lane and in opposite lanes of travel, overtaking other motorists, and driving at high rates of speed.
"Police said in a Wednesday press release that LeCroy's vehicle was traveling at approximately 104 mph shortly before the crash. A toxicology report said that LeCroy's blood alcohol concentration was .197 at the time of the incident.
"Investigators determined that alcohol impairment, racing, reckless driving, and speed were significant contributing factors to the crash."
The report from also says Carter was in and out of jail in about 15 minutes after posting a $4,000 bail.
Now, he's back in Indianapolis and will surely have to answer more questions than he anticipated.
